On that note...

On that note...

It gives me complete satisfaction in educating others – in a fun, entertaining way.

Given the fact that I’ll be a mum to two amazing girls soon, makes me realise how important it is to give all females the best foot forward in life.

Knowing and demystifying the mystery behind makeup means women can feel more confident going into job interviews and big life events.

I’m passionate about spreading the word, and using my journalistic skills to better a community.

Goals, goals, goals

Goals, goals, goals

I’m absolutely obsessed with chatting to people and breaking down difficult information into terms everyone can understand.

I’ll speak with makeup artists I’ve hand selected, who understand the importance of correct technique and application of product.

I’ll pour through articles, books, essays to give you easy to understand definitions of ‘makeup’ tools and products, so the next time you walk into a cosmetic counter or chemist, you don’t feel overwhelmed.

My Philosophy

My Philosophy

Why is it that only certain people behind a cosmetic counter ‘hold’ the power to knowing how to apply makeup?

After all, we take toddlers to swimming classes to learn water safety and mechanics need to understand how all their tools work, and function, before fixing a car.

I want to give the ‘keys’ to everyone when it comes to makeup application, and knowledge.

Getting to know you

Getting to know you

I’ve always loved helping others. I believe that being able to educate, nourishes the soul.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Communication specialising in broadcast journalist. I’ve worked as a reporter and producer for some of Australia’s biggest commercial television networks.

It was my time working as a roving reporter that I realised how important makeup was. Not only in a professional setting but also as a tool of empowerment.

Beauty products explained

Beauty products explained

No one ever sits down to tell you exactly how to wear makeup.

From my personal experience, it has been a few random encounters with ‘sale assistants’ at cosmetic counters – some good, some bad and some totally indifferent.

As a kid, I was a complete tomboy, but as I grew up I began to see makeup not just in simple terms (lipstick, foundation or eye shadow) but something I could do creatively.

Art, and drawing always came naturally to me so cosmetics became a ‘fun’ thing I could do in between my serious goals to become a journalist.

Julie Tran: How I got here

How I got here

There’s a scene in Rush Hour 2. Jackie Chan’s character is protecting a little girl from Hong Kong and in order to do so – he removes her from her hometown and she gets relocated to America.

Before Jackie Chan knows it, the girl becomes assimilated and knows EVERY SINGLE WORD to Mariah Carey’s Heartbreaker.

That to me that sums up my experience of living in Australia. My earliest memories were swaying to Boyz to Men’s End of the Road and closing my eye’s singing loudly to 4 P.M’s Sukiyaki.

The Essentials

The Essentials

Unruly eyebrows. Dead straight hair. Teeny tiny lashes. Welcome to my world! Whether it be at my local chemist, or the glossy pages of a beauty magazine – the pretty models with Caucasian skin stare back at me.

I’m different. My dad is Hokkien Chinese and my mum’s ancestry is from Chaozhou – in short, my genetic heritage is as Chinese as they come. Besides being immensely proud of this fact, I wondered whether anyone else of an Asian or ‘different’ cultural background faced a similar problem I did.

Shit just got real

Shit just got real

In between Oprah giving a motivational speech about her leadership academy in Africa for girls, I was in tears.

Here I was braless, hormonal and just months away from giving birth to identical twins.

Being a mum, does one of two things (well it did for me) … First, it made me so sleep deprived I nearly sliced my finger off while cutting an apple (so guaranteed sleep deprivation) and the other, makes you really pause about what you want from life.

Why create Julie Tran Stories?

Why create Julie Tran Stories?

It's always the same recurring nightmare. I haven't prepared enough for my Year 12 maths exam. The algebra question changes every time, but the outcome is the same - you could have done better.

Then I wake up - I have to convince myself I'm no longer in high school, that it's been almost 15 years and I've accomplished a lot.
